Chapter Twenty-Three
I looked down on the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute from several hundred feet in the sky. We had been hovering in this spot for three days observing the area. I figured at this point we had seen everything we were going to see. We needed to find a subtle weakness. A way to access the research institute where the Viraquin was being held. I also learned Buttercupâs idea of subtle differed greatly from mine.
âFor the last time, weâre not going to fake a gas explosion and level the building. It is not okay to kill people to get what you want.â
I wandered past Twitch who sat reclined on one of the copilotâs seats, gnawing on a slice of pizza. Ever since I had introduced him to the divine food he could not get enough of it. The little guy had devoured two whole pies all on his own.
âThese are not people, these are barbarians. They are holding a foreign species captive and seem quite content to torture her.â
âTo be fair, they have no idea what they have, and I doubt they know they are causing the Viraquin any pain. Theyâre just researchers trying to figure out what theyâve discovered.â
âWhere are you going?â Buttercup sounded indignant as I wandered back through the ship, exploring the space as we talked.
âI want to get the lay of the land. How often do I get a chance to wander around in an alien spaceship?â I laid my hand against an opaque touch-screen and a door irised open to my right. All the walls were made up of the same slick blue, ice-like material, though none of it felt cold to the touch. Buttercup was quite beautiful though I was hesitant to admit it. She was all about blasters and railguns. Beauty was something she would have to warm up to. At least we had gotten past the hurdle of her name ... sort of.
âIâve been working to slowly reconfigure the accommodations to your biology and stature. You should find the sleeping quarters more to your liking now.â
On my first day, I had explored a bit and discovered the last captain took his rest hanging upside down from a strange trapeze-like apparatus. Not my idea of a comfortable nightâs sleep.
âHow do you do that?â I waved my arm around in an ambiguous gesture. âYou know, the whole reconfiguring thing.â
It requires a great deal of⯠power, but I am able to align and restructure basic resources to build provisions. I must have the original building blocks to form the item. For instance, to make a frying pan I would need the equivalent amount and quality of steel, but as long as the size coefficient does not differ greatly, I can accommodate most needs as they occur.â
âThatâs amazing. And you can do this wherever you want? I mean you donât needâ¯some sort of replicator device like they have on Sci-Fi movies?â
I wandered into a new section and discovered something like a small cargo hold. There
